Introduction

This blog focuses on multicultural American literature that is appropriate for ninth grade classrooms. High school freshman are at an age where they are surrounded by new experiences and exposure to many different topics. By opening their mind to other cultures, students will have a better understanding about the world. The literature chosen teaches students about minorities and their cultures. It brings awareness to different themes that are common in different cultures. It helps to explain certain stereotypes. The purpose of including multicultural literature in the classroom is to help students to make connections to other cultures. It shows the similar values that are worldwide such as family, hard work, and accomplishing dreams. Acceptance is an important trait to have with people who come from all over the world with many different backgrounds. By teaching students about other cultures and the struggles they go through, they will have more of an open mind towards minorities and a more positive attitude towards them. The links on the blog home page lead to a section about a certain literary work that can be taught in the classroom to teach students about diversity. The links include information about the literature and my reasons for including them on the blog. I hope this helps teachers to discover literature that will benefit their students.
